FIRST EDITION. Argenson "is better known by his celebrated mot 'pas trop gouverner' (not too much government) - lineal ancestor in spirit of the laissez-faire, laissez-passer of Gournay. . . .His 'Considerations sur le gouvernement ancien et present de la France (published 1764, but written more than thirty years previously), in which he treats of democracy in a state governed by a monarch, deserves, however, to reprinted" (Palgrave).

This work, which can be seen as a prelude to much of the economic writing of France, later in the century, was praised by Rousseau in the 'Contrat social', and has some points in common with Quesnay's writings. (Spengler 73-74). N.B.G. INED 87 citing 2nd ed., 1784.Goldsmiths 10051
