Publisher Information: Paris: chez Noel . . . et Charles, 1820 circa.

Gall, Franz Joseph (1758-1828). F. J. Gall. M.D. Systeme craniologique. Engraved portrait, mounted on cardboard. [Paris: Chez Noël . . . et Charles,] n.d. [ca. 1820]. 312 x 217 mm. (print). Minor toning but very good.

The portrait shows Gall in left profile (head and shoulders). Beneath the portrait are three skulls (side, front and back views) with various phrenological “organs” indicated by numbers; a key to the numbered “organs” is below. Gall’s neuroanatomical researches, begun around the turn of the 19th century, led to his groundbreaking theory of the localization of brain function, and to the development of phrenology, the pseudoscience that claimed to be able to read a person’s character by examining the shape of his or her skull.
