First Edition, Offprint Issue. In the first part of 1933 Pauli and his assistant Hendrik Casimir held numerous discussions about how to modify the Klein-Nishina formula (giving the differential cross-section of photons scattered from a free electron) due to the effect of the state of the scattering electron. Both Pauli and Casimir delivered papers on their respective results at the 6 May meeting of the Swiss Physical Society. “In his paper Pauli thanks Heisenberg for the suggestion to test the Klein-Nishina formula in a special frequency limit. This test was negative so that, in his letter to Heisenberg of 2 June, Pauli claims the bottle of Mosel wine they had bet” (Enz, No Time to be Brief: A Scientific Biography of Wolfgang Pauli, p. 271).
