Engraved Portrait by T. Trotter after R. White.

Publisher Information: London: W. Richardson, 1794. Engraved portrait by Thomas Trotter (1750-1803) after Robert White (1645-1703) of Peter Chamberlen the third (1601-83), physician and member of the famous family that developed the obstetrical forceps. Peter Chamberlen the third was the nephew of Peter Chamberlen the Elder (1560-1631), who is credited with inventing the obstetrical forceps. The instrument's design and use remained a family secret for over a century. The name in the caption is erroneously given as "Paul Chamberlen"; Paul Chamberlen (1635-1717?) was the second son of Peter the third. See "Wellcome Images: 2000 Years of Human Culture."
