Regarding a proposed visit. Stephenson was one of the foremost British railway engineers of the nineteenth century, known particularly for his innovative and successful designs for railway bridges. As a young man, Clark worked as an assistant engineer on Stephenson's tubular girder bridge over the Menai Strait (completed in 1850); his elder brother, Edwin, was resident engineer in charge of the bridge's construction.
