"We have just tried a patented telegraph instrument of mine thro' the Atlantic Cable: it gave about 300 indications per minute, but upon connecting it with the earth the action entirely ceased. We want nothing but intensity, and that in no great degree-say 40 or 50 cells Danniells. They only gave us 20 cells!
