Portrait of Scottish chemist Thomas Graham from Maull and Polyblank's Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities (1856-60). Graham formulated Graham's law of gas diffusion, which states that the rate of effusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass of its particles. He also discovered dialysis (the process of separating molecules in solution by the difference in their rates of diffusion through a semipermeable membrane), and founded the field of colloid chemistry.
