First Edition, Offprint Issue. Garrison-Morton 6109. Kelly devised the bisection method of excising the densely adherent uterus. In the present paper he described "the great value of a somewhat similar procedure in certain bad pelvic inflammatory affections" (p. 1). During his forty years at Johns Hopkins (1889-1919), Kelly made major advances in gynecological and abdominal surgery, and was responsible for establishing gynecology as a separate field from obstetrics.
