Basch's first sphygmomanometer, invented circa 1881 and described in no. (1), made use of an inflatable rubber bag filled with water; this was fifteen years before the cuff technique invented by Riva-Rocci. Basch made earlier studies in blood pressure and blood pressure measurement techniques in the last half of the 1870s; cf. nos. (2) and (3) above. Acierno, History of Cardiology, pp. 497-98.
