Excellent impression with good margins of one of Coriolano's most famous woodcut portraits. The subject, Italian physician and scientist Fortunio Liceti, was the author of De monstrosorum causis, natura & differentiis libri duo (1616), one of the earliest classifications of deformities (see Garrison-Morton 534.53). He also published works on astronomy and spontaneous generation, and minerology. Coriolano, the son of Cristoforo Coriolano, is best known for his woodcuts, "which resemble in style those of F. Villamena" (Bryan, Biographical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers [1886]). The verso of the print is blank, indicating that it was issued separately and not as part of a book.
