First Edition. Lavoisier was a member of the committee appointed by the French Academy of Sciences to report on the state of Parisian hospitals and on the plan to construct a new hospital on the Isle des Cygnes. The committee's report described the wretched conditions found in the Hôtel-Dieu-overcrowding, filth, indiscriminate mixing of contagious and non-contagious diseases, high mortality rate- and called for immediate reform; however, the committee rejected the Isle de Cygnes plan in favor of four smaller hospitals, which the King ordered to be constructed on June 22, 1787. Duveen & Klickstein 239. Norman 1289.
