First Edition. The rare academic issue of Janet's thesis for the M.D. It continues the research first described in his l'Automatisme psychologique (1889), in which Janet anticipated Breuer and Freud in important ways, viz., the concept that hysterical symptoms are due to subconscious fixed ideas that have been isolated and forgotten, but which can be identified and re-integrated by means of hypnosis (see Bliss, Multiple Personality 38 ff.). The thesis considers Le Suggestion et les actes subconscients, Les idees fixe, attacks, somnabulism, deliriums, and concludes with l'Hysterie au point de vue psychologique. In 1894, the thesis was published commercially as part two of Janet's l'Etat mental des Hysteriques, which was translated into English in 1901, and is considered one of his most important books. Zilboorg 375-76.
