Notice des travaux
Pasteur, Louis (1822-95). Notice des travaux. 4to. 16pp. Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1856. 275 x 218 mm. Original printed wrappers, slightly worn & dust-soiled. Very good copy.
First Edition. Pasteur's abstracts of 13 of his early papers on optical activity, asymmetry and crystal structure. "Beginning about 1847, Pasteur carried out an impressive series of investigations into the relation between optical activity, crystalline structure, and chemical composition in organic compounds, particularly tartaric and paratartaric acids. This work focused attention on the relationship between optical activity and life, and provided much inspiration and several of the most important techniques for an entirely new approach to the study of chemical structure and composition. In essence, Pasteur opened the way to a consideration of the disposition of atoms in space" (DSB).
