Mutter, Thomas D.
Liston. Lectures on the operations of surgery . . . with numerous additions by Thomas D. Mutter [1811-59]. . . . 8vo. adverts., 565, pp. (last leaf blank), adverts. 216 text wood-engravings. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1846. 233 x 147 mm. Publisher's sheep, rubbed. Some browning. Very good copy.
First Book-Form Edition, from serialization in The Lancet, with nearly 250pp. of additions by Mutter, professor of surgery at Jefferson Medical College, on subjects touched on lightly or not at all by Liston (Mutter's additions enclosed in brackets). There was some expectation that another series of lectures would be forthcoming from Liston, which Mutter also intended to publish, but Liston died the following year, and there was no further publication. This series is the only published version of Liston's lectures.
Mutter's additions are especially valuable for plastic surgery; he gives, for example, a description of his shoulder flap, for burns involving secondary injuries to the front side of the thorax (1841, see Wallace 45-46; also Gabka & Vaubel 68, referencing to the above). However, Zeis / Patterson, while indexing to M¸tter eight times for papers, does not cite his edition of Liston. Zeis does refer to a German translation of Liston's lectures, Vorlesungen uber wichtige Gegenstande der therapeutischen und operativen Chirurgie, Leipzig, 1847. Zeis assigns this title to the joint authorship of C. Hawkins and Liston. Patterson's note to this entry states that he could not "find any work in English with this joint authorship." The Zeis reference may be an erroneous reference to the Mutter edition, or to the serialized form in The Lancet from which it was taken. See Rutkow GS20, the syllabi for Mutter's own surgery lectures. He wrote no books; his edition of Liston is his most extensive publication in surgery.
