First Edition in French of Franklin's Way to Wealth, the most popular of his writings. It first appeared as a separate publication in English in 1757, and was translated into French during the time when Franklin was in France negotiating on behalf of the United States during the American Revolution. Franklin was so popular with the French that his name was widely known even among the lower classes. The Way to Wealth asks what the American colonies are to do about the heavy taxes imposed on them. The French edition includes Franklin's opinion on the Stamp Act, given in 1766, in which he said that the colonies would come to think that Britain had no right to levy internal or external taxes, or make binding laws. DAB. Ford 113. Not in Kress or Goldsmiths.
