Lehrbuch der vergleichenden Anatomie der Wirbelthiere.
8vo.xii, 482pp. 225 x 145 mm. Contemporary half calf, gilt, slightly rubbed. Old stamp on title & light foxing, but a fine copy.
FIRST BOOK-FORM EDITION. Garrison-Morton 331, citing two-part series by Stannius & von Siebold, of which the above is the second part, although the first to be published. Stannius's monograph on vertebrates was published in parts in 1845-46, then as a complete book in 1846 as above, while von Siebold's monograph on invertebrates came out in 1848, to complete the series. 'Through their comparative anatomy Siebold and Stannius made an extremely valuable contribution to the development of morphological science' (Nordenskiold 418;also 417). They paid special attention to microscopical anatomy, much more so, for example, than their contemporary Owen. See Garrison-Morton 812, Stannius' research on the heartbeat. DSB. Cole II 326 (1845-46 part-publication). Not in Waller.
