FIRST EDITION. Garrison-Morton 5827. "In 1722 . . . Saint-Yves . . . attempted to couch a cataract and by mischance he displaced the cataractous body through the pupil into the anterior chamber. He then incised the eye and removed the body. This was the first occasion on which the lens had been removed from a living subject" (Singer, History of medicine 645). Also recorded here is the first extensive use of silver nitrate in treating eye diseases, the earliest use of silver nitrate in cases of ophthalmia neonatorum, and the first exact description of gonorrheal ophthalmia.
